Kano, Nigeria — A man in Kano State, Malam Surajo Yarima, has called on Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to address an alleged injustice after his house, valued at N20 million, was auctioned for N2 million to settle a N300,000 debt.
In an interview with Hikima Radio/TV, monitored by newsmen on Tuesday, Yarima revealed that his house was sold by a court after he failed to repay a N300,000 debt. The sale also left him, his wife, and nine children homeless.
Yarima explained that he missed several court sittings because he was out of the state, despite summons being pasted on his house gate. On January 4th, the court auctioned the property, and his attempt to repay the debt two days later was rejected by the creditor.
“I brought the N300,000 on 6th January, but my creditor refused to accept it. Now, my family and I are sleeping outside,” Yarima lamented.
The court stated that Yarima had the opportunity to appeal the decision within three weeks of its verdict. However, the incident has sparked public outrage, with many urging the governor to investigate the matter.
