The Kano State Government has firmly opposed the tax reform bills proposed by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, labeling them “ill-timed and detrimental.”
Deputy Governor Abdussalam Gwarzo, speaking on behalf of Governor Abba Yusuf during the New Year celebration at the Mahaha Open Theatre, criticized the proposed laws. He highlighted the economic and security challenges facing Nigerians, particularly in the North, and urged the federal government to prioritize addressing extreme poverty and hunger.
“These tax reforms will not solve our economic problems. Kano State opposes any policy that undermines the welfare of its people,” he said.
Governor Yusuf also reflected on his administration’s achievements in healthcare, education, road infrastructure, and foreign scholarship programs. He emphasized the importance of unity and peace, referencing the Supreme Court’s January 2024 ruling affirming his election as governor and the reinstatement of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano.
He called on those interfering in Kano Emirate affairs to respect the law, stating, “The authority to appoint an Emir lies solely with the governor.”
The celebration featured vibrant performances by Hausa artists and a dazzling fireworks display, symbolizing hope for the New Year. Governor Yusuf encouraged residents to remain united, declaring, “Let 2025 be a year of shared prosperity and progress. Together, we will build a stronger Kano.”
Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Hon. Yusuf Jibril Falgore, also extended his New Year’s greetings and urged citizens to support the government’s efforts to deliver democratic dividends.
The event underscored Kano’s cultural richness and the government’s dedication to the well-being of its people.
