Uyo, Nigeria — Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has expressed his willingness to waive his constitutional immunity and submit to any investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) or the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) if necessary.
The pledge follows a petition by an anonymous group within the All Progressives Congress (APC), calling for a probe into the financial records of former Governor Udom Emmanuel’s administration.
In an interview monitored in Uyo, Governor Eno dismissed speculation about his rumored defection to the APC and reiterated his commitment to running an administration anchored on transparency, accountability, and due process.
A Call for Unity and Respect
Governor Eno criticized persistent attempts by detractors to tarnish the reputation of past Akwa Ibom leaders, including Obong Victor Attah, Chief Godswill Akpabio, and his immediate predecessor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel. He described these actions as divisive and counterproductive.
He noted that since assuming office on May 29, 2023, his bipartisan approach has fostered positive relationships with the federal government, yielding tangible socio-economic benefits for Akwa Ibom. He urged political agitators to desist from sowing discord, emphasizing the need for cooperation across party lines.
“We must stop the cycle of animosity,” Eno declared. “Akwa Ibom cannot thrive under a culture of conflict and division. Despite party differences, I am committed to supporting leaders like Senate President Godswill Akpabio and encouraging them to contribute positively to our state’s development.”
No Room for Political Hostility
The governor vowed not to engage in politically suffocating tactics, stating his belief in mutual respect and collaboration. “I do not inherit enemies,” he said. “My administration will continue to build bridges, not burn them.”
Governor Eno reaffirmed his respect for President Bola Tinubu and Minister Ekperikpe Ekpo, emphasizing that his focus remains on forging alliances that advance the interests of Akwa Ibom.
“To those expecting me to fight with our leaders, I say this: Akwa Ibom deserves better. I will work with everyone to ensure the progress of our state,” he concluded.
