The Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has introduced new standardised uniforms for Supernumerary Police (SPY) officers and directed all organizations utilizing SPY personnel to adhere to the new uniforms.
The announcement was made during the inauguration of the new standard SPY police uniforms in Abuja, where Egbetokun emphasized the importance of implementing the new uniforms.
Egbetokun stated that all organizations using SPY personnel must strictly comply with the new standardised uniforms. He instructed the Force Quartermaster and personnel across the states to provide guidance on the registration and acquisition of the new uniforms. Furthermore, all Police Training Schools were directed to adopt the new uniform issuance model for SPY Police personnel.
The IG highlighted that the Nigeria Police Force is actively working to prevent the unauthorized production and distribution of police uniforms, including SPY uniforms. He emphasized that the inauguration of the new standardised SPY police uniforms and kits marks a significant milestone towards enhancing professionalism and visibility among the officers.
Under Section 21(7) of the Nigeria Police Act 2020 (as amended), the SPY Police is recognized as an integral unit within the Nigeria Police Force, with defined powers, privileges, functions, and supervision by the Force. Private organizations or government departments seeking to utilize SPY officers for property protection must apply to the I-G in accordance with Section 21 of the Act.
Egbetokun acknowledged that the SPY unit has faced challenges in establishing a distinct identity, with the lack of a standardized and distinctive uniform hindering efforts in creating and enhancing its identity.
The introduction of the new standardised uniforms aims to address this obstacle.
