Gunmen suspected to be herdsmen have reportedly killed the Labour Party Chairman in Igumale Ward 1 of Ado Local Government Area in Benue State, Mr. Sunday Oche.
The tragic incident occurred when Oche and five others were on their way back from a farm and were ambushed by armed herdsmen. Oche was shot and killed on the spot, while the other five individuals sustained serious injuries as they tried to escape from the attackers.
According to a source familiar with the situation, the victims, who had gone to the farm on two motorbikes, encountered the armed herdsmen on their way back. The attackers opened fire, resulting in the death of the Chairman and injuries to the other individuals.
The attackers fled the scene before the arrival of youths who mobilized in response to the incident. Oche left behind a wife and two children, and plans are underway for his burial while the injured are receiving medical treatment.
The Benue State Labour Party Publicity Secretary, Tersoo Orbunde, confirmed the tragic event and stated that the body of the deceased had been recovered and preparations for burial were in progress.
The matter has also been reported to the police for necessary action, although the Police Public Relations Officer, Catherine Anene, mentioned that she had not received information on the matter at that point in time.
