Katsina—In a disturbing incident in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State, unidentified gunmen believed to be bandits have targeted the General Hospital, resulting in the shooting of a medical doctor and the abduction of five other hospital staff members.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abubakar Aliyu, confirmed the attack in a statement, revealing that efforts were underway to track down the perpetrators and secure the release of the kidnapped individuals. The police are actively investigating the incident.
The attack took place on January 14, 2025, at approximately 8:20 pm when armed bandits armed with AK-47 rifles stormed the Kankara General Hospital, unleashing terror by firing shots indiscriminately.
In response to the distress call, the Divisional Police Headquarters in Kankara mobilized swiftly to the scene, engaging in a confrontation with the assailants and managing to thwart the attack. However, two individuals sustained gunshot wounds during the exchange.
Dr. Murtala Saleh, a 30-year-old doctor, was shot in the right thigh, and Kamala Suleiman, a 20-year-old, sustained an injury to the knee. Both victims are currently receiving medical treatment and are reported to be in stable condition.
Tragically, three hospital staff members were abducted by the armed bandits. Law enforcement authorities are working diligently to secure the safe release of the kidnapped victims and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The State Police Commissioner, Aliyu Abubakar Musa, has strongly condemned the assault on healthcare workers and facilities and has directed the deployment of additional security resources to the area to bolster protection and intensify efforts to apprehend the culprits.
