Guild Raises Alarm Over Police Abduction of Journalists

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has expressed serious concern over the increasing incidents of journalists being abducted and arrested by security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police Force, under the pretext of enforcing the Cyber Security Act.

In a press statement issued by NGE President Eze Anaba and General Secretary Dr. Iyobosa Uwugiaren following a meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, the guild highlighted the adverse effects of these illegal actions on press freedom.

The statement detailed the guild’s deliberations on the current state of the media, focusing on the growing trend of journalist abductions and arrests. It warned that these actions, ostensibly under the Cyber Security Act, threaten press freedom.

The NGE emphasized that the Cyber Security Act was intended to provide a legal framework for combating cybercrimes, not to persecute journalists carrying out their legitimate duties in a democracy. The guild called on security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police, to understand and respect the true purpose of the Act.

The editors condemned the methods used in the abduction and arrest of journalists, citing long detentions and inhumane treatment as contrary to democratic principles. They reiterated that press freedom is crucial for a healthy democracy, enabling the media to report news and express opinions without government interference, censorship, or retribution.

The NGE also warned of the risks of allowing parts of Nigeria to fall under the control of terrorists and bandits. They stressed that the federal government has the necessary resources to address the country’s insecurity and ensure peace for all residents.

Regarding the challenging economic environment in which the media operates, the NGE called on the federal government to support the sustainability of the media industry through robust economic policies and direct interventions. They also criticized the high cost of living exacerbated by the government’s economic policies and urged for sustainable measures to mitigate these effects.
