Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has signed the Nasarawa State Electricity Law 2024, enabling the state to generate and distribute electricity independently.
The signing ceremony took place at the Government House in Lafia, marking a milestone in Nasarawa’s pursuit of sustainable energy solutions. The law aligns with a constitutional amendment signed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023, which grants states the authority to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity within areas covered by the national grid.
Speaking at the event, Governor Sule highlighted the significance of the new law, noting its potential to harness the state’s abundant hydro and solar energy resources. He emphasized that the legislation stems from a federal initiative to devolve power generation capabilities to states, fostering local energy development.
“This electricity law will regulate the sector within the state and lead to the establishment of a dedicated commission to enhance power supply for our people,” Governor Sule stated.
The Fifth Alteration Bill No. 33, Devolution of Powers (National Grid System), which underpins this development, has paved the way for Nasarawa to leverage its energy resources effectively, creating a framework for improved electricity access and economic growth.
