The Governing Council of the University of Abuja (UniAbuja) has appointed Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi as the institution’s 7th substantive Vice-Chancellor.
The announcement was made during the 77th Extraordinary Council Meeting, chaired by Air Vice-Marshal Saddiq Ismaila Kaita (Rtd), on Tuesday, December 31, 2024. Her appointment takes effect from January 1, 2025, for a non-renewable tenure of five years.
Maikudi emerged as the top candidate among 10 shortlisted individuals interviewed by the Joint Council and Senate Selection Board, following established regulations. Her leadership was affirmed despite some members boycotting the council meeting earlier that day.
Prior to this appointment, Professor Maikudi served as acting Vice-Chancellor from July 5, 2024, effectively steering the university through a period of significant challenges and earning widespread recognition for her leadership and dedication.
A Trailblazing Scholar and Leader
Born on January 31, 1983, in Katsina State, Professor Aisha Maikudi is a distinguished scholar in International Law. She began her education at Sacred Heart School, Kaduna, and later attended Queens College, Yaba, Lagos. She holds an LLB from the University of Reading (2004), an LLM in Public International Law from the London School of Economics (2005), and a PhD in International Law from the University of Abuja (2015).
Joining UniAbuja as a Lecturer II in 2008, Maikudi rose to the rank of professor by 2021. She has held several groundbreaking positions, including the first female Head of Department in 2013, the first female Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Law in 2018, and the founding Director of the University of Abuja International Centre in 2019. As Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), she championed the enhancement of academic standards and fostered a culture of excellence.
Innovative Contributions and Global Recognition
Professor Maikudi introduced the “United Nations Law” course at UniAbuja in 2019, contributing significantly to legal scholarship through extensive research and publications. She has supervised numerous theses and dissertations, further enriching the field of International Law.
Her expertise and leadership have been recognized globally, with invitations to present papers at national and international conferences in the UK, US, South Africa, Germany, Italy, China, Ghana, and Egypt. She is also an active member of professional bodies, including the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA).
In a statement posted on its verified Facebook page, the University described Maikudi’s appointment as heralding “a new era of progress and transformation for the University of Abuja.
