Kano state, Nigeria:Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has secured the release of eight female inmates from the Goron-Dutse Correctional Centre by settling their fines and compensation fees. The beneficiaries include two pregnant women and two nursing mothers.
The gesture was part of the governor’s broader commitment to inmate rehabilitation and welfare improvement within correctional facilities. The intervention occurred during an unscheduled visit to the centre, where Governor Yusuf was accompanied by senior government officials.
In a statement issued on Friday, the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, confirmed the release and outlined the administration’s ongoing efforts to support vulnerable inmates and address overcrowding.
Governor Yusuf emphasized the need to improve prison conditions and accelerate judicial processes. He disclosed that out of 1,939 inmates at the Goron-Dutse facility, only 382 had been convicted, while 1,536 remained in custody awaiting trial. He pledged to work with the judiciary to expedite legal proceedings and reduce congestion in correctional centres.
During his visit, the governor addressed the inmates, urging them to remain optimistic and use their time in custody for personal growth and transformation. He also announced immediate welfare support, including the provision of cows, food items, mattresses, blankets, and beverages.
In a related development, Governor Yusuf visited the Janguza Maximum Security Correctional Facility, where he revealed plans to relocate inmates from the overcrowded Kurmawa Correctional Centre. He expressed satisfaction with the facilities at Janguza and commended retired General Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau, former Minister of Interior, for his role in its establishment.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to justice reform, Governor Yusuf underscored ongoing initiatives to reintegrate rehabilitated inmates through education, vocational training, and continued support for students returning to school.
