Five Oyo Kingmakers Reject Alaafin-Elect, Prince Owoade

OYO – Kingmakers in Oyo have rejected the appointment of Prince Abimbola Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo, describing it as illegal and unlawful. The state government had earlier announced the approval of Prince Owoade’s appointment by Governor Seyi Makinde, two years after the stool became vacant.

Five kingmakers from the town, however, declared the appointment null and void, insisting that the only candidate they recommended for the position was Prince Luqman Gbadegesin. The kingmakers, represented by their legal counsel, Adekunle Sobaloju SAN, expressed their grievances in a letter addressed to the governor.

They argued that the selection of the Alaafin must adhere to the Registered Alaafin of Oyo Chieftaincy Declaration of 1967, which specifies that the Bashorun of Oyo, as head of the Oyomesi, has the authority to summon kingmakers for the selection process. The letter revealed that Prince Gbadegesin was chosen by the majority vote during a meeting held on September 30, 2022, and his name was forwarded to the governor for approval, which was withheld without explanation.

The kingmakers criticized the governor’s claim that the new appointment was based on wide consultations and divination, stating that such practices are contrary to the native law and custom codified in the 1967 declaration. They accused the government of convening an unauthorized meeting with selected kingmakers and emergency warrant chiefs to favor Prince Owoade’s selection, describing it as invalid and unlawful.

The kingmakers emphasized that the decision to appoint a new Alaafin must comply with Oyo’s traditions and legal framework, urging the state government to reverse the decision. They warned that any deviation could further disrupt the selection process and diminish the integrity of the institution.
