Family Urges Police Action as Land Dispute Turns Deadly

Ogun State, Nigeria  —  The Ileke family of Osuke, Ogun State, has issued an urgent plea to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Ogun State Government to intervene in the escalating violence within their community following the gruesome murder of Saheed Jinadu Shoboyede.

Amid rising tensions over a long-standing land dispute, the family is calling for a thorough investigation into the killing and the series of violent incidents that have plagued their community. They fear that without immediate intervention, more lives will be lost.

The latest tragedy struck last Thursday when over a hundred armed men, allegedly led by a notorious land grabber, Elijah Adeogun, also known as “Elijah Killer,” launched a brutal attack on Osuke. The assault occurred just days after another resident, Rasak Yusuf, was shot and wounded in a similar attack.

In a formal petition addressed to the Ogun State Commissioner of Police and the State House of Assembly, the Ileke family accused Adeogun and his gang of orchestrating relentless attacks on their community, despite multiple court rulings affirming the family’s ownership of the disputed land.

Olanrewaju Balogun, a family member and legal representative, disclosed that both the Ogun State High Court and the Court of Appeal had ruled in favor of the Ileke family. Yet, despite these legal victories, they continue to face violence, intimidation, and death threats from land grabbers seeking to take over their ancestral property.

“The police in Ogun State have failed us,” the family lamented in their petition. “We demand an independent investigation into the murder of Saheed Jinadu Shoboyede and all other violent attacks linked to Elijah Adeogun. If authorities remain silent, innocent lives will continue to be lost.”

Eyewitnesses recounted the terrifying events of February 24 and 27, 2025, when armed assailants stormed Osuke, leaving residents in fear. Yusuf was injured in the first attack, while Shoboyede was killed in broad daylight during the second assault. Witnesses claimed that before succumbing to his injuries, Shoboyede identified Adeogun as his attacker. The family further alleged that the perpetrators attempted to remove his body to cover up the crime but were stopped by vigilant community members.

Despite numerous reports to law enforcement, the family expressed frustration over the authorities’ failure to act decisively. They pointed to Adeogun’s controversial past, revealing that he had previously faced murder charges—charges that were inexplicably dropped by the Ogun State Ministry of Justice, despite an initial recommendation for prosecution by the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The Ileke family is now urging urgent intervention from the Ogun State Government, the IGP, and the State House of Assembly. “The authorities cannot continue to ignore this crisis,” they insisted. “If justice is not served, it will send a dangerous signal that criminals can act with impunity while law-abiding families live in fear.”

Their petition highlights the pressing need for law enforcement to restore order and hold perpetrators accountable. “Osuke is gradually turning into a war zone due to the unchecked activities of these criminal elements. If security agencies fail to act swiftly, the violence will spiral further, and more innocent people will lose their lives,” the petition warned.

In response to the situation, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Omolola Odutola, confirmed the murder and stated that the State Criminal Investigations Department has taken over the case. However, no arrests have been made so far, leaving the community on edge as they await justice.
