Experts Urge Increased Funding for ECOWAS Standby Force

Abuja, Nigeria  —  Security and defense experts emphasize the need for greater financial investment to strengthen the logistical capacity of the ECOWAS Standby Force (ESF) in tackling regional security challenges.

The call was made during the Experts Validation Meeting on the ECOWAS Standby Force (ESF) Logistics Concept and Logistics Depot Policies, held in Abuja. Air Commodore Sampson Eyekosi, Chairman of the expert committee, highlighted the critical role of funding in ensuring the efficiency and self-reliance of peace operations across West Africa.

“Financial resources are the backbone of any operation. To sustain peacekeeping efforts, ECOWAS must actively seek alternative funding mechanisms, including private sector engagement, while encouraging member states to contribute more to logistics,” Eyekosi stated.

He further underscored the importance of technology in modern security operations, advocating for the use of artificial intelligence, drones, and advanced early-warning systems to counter terrorism, insurgency, and climate-induced threats.

“Technology is key. A proactive approach, integrating AI, surveillance systems, and the participation of youth and women, will enhance regional peace and security,” he added.

The five-day meeting brought together experts in logistics, administration, and security strategy to refine frameworks for effective peace support operations. Among the key outcomes was the advancement of a new airport project in Sierra Leone, alongside the establishment of clear operational guidelines for seamless deployments.

Eyekosi also stressed the need for self-sufficiency in peacekeeping equipment, advocating for local production within West Africa rather than reliance on foreign supplies.

“We must prioritize local manufacturing of essential peacekeeping gear such as uniforms and logistics materials, leveraging renewable energy sources like CNG to reduce dependence on external partners,” he asserted.

Expressing optimism, Eyekosi reaffirmed that the initiatives adopted would significantly enhance the region’s security landscape. He called for continued engagement with political leaders and strategic involvement of all stakeholders, including the media, to drive the successful implementation of the Standby Force’s mandate.

The meeting concluded with the adoption of key policies to guide the ECOWAS Logistics Depot, ensuring that the Standby Force is well-equipped to address security threats effectively across West Africa.
