In a press conference held in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State government vehemently denied any involvement in bribery attempts towards members of the judiciary or their representatives. Engr Jude Okpor, the commissioner for information and state orientation, dismissed the allegations made by Ambassador Paschal Oluchukwu, the president of the Association of Ebonyi Indigenes Socio-Cultural in the Diaspora (AEISCID), as deceitful and baseless. Oluchukwu had claimed that the state government intended to offer a bribe of N1 billion to the state election petitions tribunal.
Engr Jude Okpor emphasized that the state government holds the judiciary and its Lordships in high regard, expressing unwavering confidence in the Nigerian judicial system. He further stated that Governor Francis Nwifuru has no reason to be apprehensive about the outcome of the election tribunal cases, as he and other candidates from the All Progressives Congress (APC) were elected by the people of Ebonyi State with a significant majority.
The commissioner affirmed Governor Nwifuru’s belief in the integrity and impeccable character of the tribunal judges, asserting that they would never compromise their principles by soliciting or accepting financial inducements from anyone or any group.
Engr Jude Okpor lamented the unfortunate situation where politicians who were rejected by the people of Ebonyi during the previous general elections would employ someone who was not present in the state during the elections to make defamatory statements against the tribunal judges and the entire Nigerian judiciary. He attributed these actions to an attempt to gain cheap political advantage.
