Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, Kano State, formerly known as Kano University of Science and Technology, Wudil (KUST Wudil), has been plunged into darkness following a power disconnection by the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO).
KEDCO disconnected the university about a week ago due to an outstanding bill exceeding N248 million, disrupting the institution’s academic activities.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, the university’s Dean of Students’ Affairs, Prof. Abdulkadir Dambazau, explained that efforts to persuade KEDCO to reconnect the institution to the National Grid have been unsuccessful, as the company insists on full payment of the debt.
Dambazau mentioned that the university had made a partial payment of N20 million, representing its increased monthly subvention from the State Government. Despite this, the university, with a population of 28,000, is struggling to maintain its services, including academics and water supply.
To manage electricity consumption, the university has implemented local load shedding, reducing the monthly bill to just over N50 million.
Prof. Dambazau outlined three potential solutions to the crisis: financial intervention from the State Government, passing the burden onto students, or shutting down the institution.
