Court Directs OSIEC to Proceed with Osun LG Elections

Osogbo, Nigeria  — The Osun State High Court has ruled that the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) should proceed with the local government elections slated for February 22, 2025.

The judgment followed a legal challenge initiated by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against OSIEC and its Chairman, Hashim Abioye.

Delivering the ruling, Justice A. Aderigbigbe affirmed that all 30 local government areas in the state currently have vacant positions, adding that the October 15, 2022 election was previously nullified.

The court also directed security agencies, including the Nigeria Police, Army, Department of State Security Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Amotekun Corps, and local vigilante groups, to ensure comprehensive security coverage before, during, and after the polls.

The ruling underscores the court’s commitment to upholding the democratic process while reinforcing the role of security agencies in safeguarding the electoral exercise.
