The Borno State Ministry of Health has confirmed a cholera outbreak in the state, as revealed by the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Prof. Baba Gana, at the Eye Center in Maiduguri.
Prof. Gana disclosed that 17 individuals tested positive for cholera out of 200 samples sent for analysis. He linked the outbreak to the recent flooding that has severely impacted parts of the state.
In response to the disaster, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has dispatched additional personnel to aid Maiduguri residents affected by the flooding.
During a visit to the region, Vice President Kashim Shettima, accompanied by government officials, assured that the federal government under President Bola Tinubu would provide relief materials for the flood victims and take action to prevent future disasters.
Prof. Gana identified Jere, Mafa, Konduga, Dikwa, and Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) as areas with confirmed cholera cases. Although no deaths have been reported, the commissioner noted a significant rise in cases across several local government areas, with neighboring states Adamawa and Yobe also experiencing outbreaks.
So far, 451 suspected cholera cases have been reported across Borno, with 17 confirmed positive. The state government has implemented immediate measures to contain the outbreak, while partners such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) have set up facilities to treat suspected cases.
To combat the spread of the disease, approximately 400,000 vaccines have been made available. The United Nations had previously raised concerns about the potential for cholera outbreaks in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in Maiduguri due to the severe flooding in the area.
