The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Disciplinary Board has penalized the Libyan Football Federation (LFF) for misconduct during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Benin, held in Benghazi on November 18, 2024.
According to a statement published on CAF’s official website, the sanctions followed deliberations by the Disciplinary Board on various incidents from both the AFCON qualifiers and CAF Interclub Competitions.
The Board found Libya in breach of Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code, citing inappropriate behavior by supporters and officials during and after the match. Consequently, the LFF has been ordered to play its next two official home matches behind closed doors. Additionally, a $50,000 fine has been imposed.
This is not the first time Libya has faced CAF’s disciplinary measures. In October, CAF awarded Nigeria a 3-0 victory after a matchday four qualifier between Libya and Nigeria was canceled. The cancellation occurred due to the Super Eagles being stranded at a Libyan airport for over 12 hours without food or water, prompting them to refuse to play.
CAF’s investigation into the incident resulted in Libya being fined $50,000 and Nigeria being awarded three points and three goals.
With these developments, the Super Eagles and Benin Republic have successfully secured qualification for AFCON 2025, scheduled to take place in Morocco, while Libya and Rwanda have been eliminated from contention.
