UNITED STATE – Jack Smith, the attorney who led the prosecution against United States President-elect Donald Trump, has reportedly resigned and left the country. According to a report submitted to U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon, Smith completed his work and filed his final confidential report on January 7 before making the decision to step down.

Smith had been overseeing Trump’s case related to the alleged mishandling of confidential documents after leaving office and his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. However, after Trump’s victory in the 2024 elections, Smith dropped all charges against the President-elect.
Smith’s legal team stated that while the cases against Trump were valid, they could not pursue them given Trump’s impending return to the presidency.
