Ikuforiji: Obasa’s Impeachment Resulted From Complacency

LAGOS STATE, NIGERIAAdeyemi Ikuforiji, a former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has attributed the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa to his complacency and neglect of his fellow lawmakers. Speaking during an interview on News Central, Ikuforiji explained that Obasa’s long tenure and increasing comfort in his role led to strained relationships with other members, making his downfall inevitable.

Ikuforiji emphasized the importance of humility in leadership, remarking that the Speaker’s seat is “hot” and should never be taken for granted. He explained that the success of a Speaker is built on the support of all 40 members of the House, and if any member feels aggrieved, it jeopardizes the Speaker’s position.

The former Speaker cautioned against treating colleagues as subordinates, saying that leadership should never breed complacency or arrogance. He pointed out that Obasa’s failure to maintain this balance contributed significantly to his impeachment.

Reflecting on the events leading up to Obasa’s removal, Ikuforiji stated that the signs of a change in leadership were clear. He expressed sadness over the way Obasa’s tenure ended, acknowledging his long service but stressing the need for humility and collaboration in leadership.

Ikuforiji’s comments serve as a reminder for future leaders to maintain mutual respect and not allow their positions to overshadow the importance of working together with colleagues.
