Blackout in Lagos, Others as Ikeja West-Osogbo 330kV Fails

Abuja, Nigeria  —  The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has raised concerns over a looming power outage across parts of Lagos and neighboring areas following the collapse of a section of the Ikeja West–Osogbo 330kV transmission line.

The alarm was raised in a statement released by Ms. Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, detailing that the fault occurred on the evening of Wednesday, April 2, 2025, during a stormy rainfall, approximately 14.9 kilometers from the Ikeja West Transmission Substation.

According to Mbah, an in-depth assessment of the incident revealed that Tower 528 caved in after a trailer collided with disconnected conductors from Tower 527, subsequently impacting Towers 526 and 524.

“The system experienced a load loss of 165 megawatts, affecting the electricity supply to Eko, Ikeja, and Ibadan Distribution Companies (DisCos),” the statement confirmed.

Despite the setback, the company assured Nigerians that swift repair work was underway. “Our engineers are on-site, working round-the-clock to restore structural integrity and ensure that bulk power transmission resumes across the affected regions,” Mbah noted.

In the interim, TCN has rerouted the lost 165MW load through alternate transmission lines to cushion the impact on the affected DisCos, thereby maintaining some level of supply continuity.

Reaffirming its commitment, the company emphasized that it remains dedicated to providing stable and dependable electricity transmission across Nigeria, even amidst unforeseen disruptions.
