The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) of the Bauchi State-owned Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU) has declared an indefinite strike action, citing absence of pension and retirement schemes, deplorable working conditions as well as unpaid earned academic allowances.
Chairperson of ASUU in the institution, Comrade Auwal Nuhu made the declaration for the strike action at a press conference held shortly after a congress on Friday at the Yuli campus of the university.
He directed that the strike to commence immediately at 12:00pm on Friday, 29th November, 2024.
“The Congress noted the lack of readiness and commitment of the University administration and the Government to attend to its demands,” Comrade Nuhu added said.
He added that all mechanisms and attempts to get the authorities to attend to its demands were fruitless, noting that such channels had been exhausted.
“Consequently, the Congress passed a resolution for the Branch to embark on comprehensive and indefinite strike action until further notice,” he said.
He described the working situation as “unbearable” and accused the university management and Bauchi State government of failing to address longstanding grievances despite repeated calls for intervention.
“We cannot continue to work under these conditions. Our members are demoralised and left without any form of financial security after decades of service. This strike is a last resort after exhaustive dialogue and appeals,” the ASUU chairperson stated.
Nuhu maintained that the strike will not end until tangible measures were taken to resolve their concerns.
Our correspondent reports that the indefinite strike is expected to disrupt academic activities and further strain the relationship between the university’s management and its staff.
Students who are already grappling with a tight academic calendar are now left in uncertainty over the declared industrial action in the institution.
