Bauchi Government Inaugurates Technical Committee on New Minimum Wage Implementation

The Bauchi State government, in collaboration with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), has inaugurated an 11-member tripartite technical committee to finalize the implementation of the national minimum wage for civil servants in the state.

Speaking to reporters after the State Executive Council meeting, NLC Chairman Comrade Dauda Shu’aibu announced that N70,000 had been agreed upon as the new minimum wage. The meeting included leaders of the state’s labor unions.

Comrade Shu’aibu said, “We are here to inform you of the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting, which concluded discussions between the NLC, TUC, and the state government regarding the new national minimum wage for 2024. Five steps are involved in this process. First, negotiations were completed, and N70,000 was agreed upon. Second, the legislation passed through both the House of Representatives and the Senate.”

He further explained, “The third step was obtaining the President’s assent, followed by the gazetting of the law, which has also been concluded. Lastly, circulars have been issued by the National Salaries and Wages Commission to all relevant ministries, departments, and agencies nationwide.”

The NLC chairman also noted that the national leadership had organized training sessions on the negotiation strategies in both Kano and Lagos for the northern and southern zones, respectively.

Shu’aibu emphasized that the newly inaugurated technical committee, comprising representatives from various salary structures in the state, would immediately begin working on the implementation. Negotiations with all the necessary tools and documents were set to commence on Friday, October 4, 2024.
