Barcelona, Spain — La Liga giants Barcelona have expressed interest in signing Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min on a free transfer, according to reports from Spanish publication El Nacional.
Son, 32, is in the final year of his contract at Spurs, having last extended his deal in 2021. With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, the South Korean captain is now eligible to negotiate pre-contract agreements with foreign clubs as the January transfer window opens.
Barcelona, grappling with financial challenges in recent years, are reportedly exploring the free-agent market to strengthen their squad. Son is among several high-profile players the Catalan club is targeting, alongside Bayern Munich duo Joshua Kimmich and Leroy Sane, as well as Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah.
Despite captaining Tottenham, Son has struggled to find consistent form this season. In the Premier League, he has scored just five goals in 17 appearances. Fatigue also saw him excluded from the starting lineup in Spurs’ recent 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United.
Barcelona’s interest in Son reflects their strategy of pursuing free transfers to bolster their squad while managing financial constraints. The South Korean star’s availability could present an opportunity for the Blaugrana to add experience and versatility to their attacking options.
