Ado Ekiti, Nigeria — Tragedy struck in Ado Ekiti as a young woman, Ifeoluwa Adekalu, lost her life to an accidental gun discharge by a policeman.
The incident occurred on Thursday at the Okela Police Station in the Ekiti State capital. According to reports, the yet-to-be-named officer, visiting the station, fired his weapon in celebration upon hearing news of a colleague’s promotion. The stray bullet fatally struck Ifeoluwa, a mother of one.
There is conflicting information about the exact location of the victim during the shooting. One source revealed that Ifeoluwa was hit near a salon opposite the police station while returning from paying her accommodation rent. Another account claimed she was at the station to visit her husband, who was in detention.
Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, the young woman succumbed to her injuries.
Speaking on the incident, the State Police Commissioner, AIG Adewale Adeniran, confirmed the tragic event and disclosed that the officer involved has been disarmed and detained.
“This matter is being thoroughly investigated, and the officer will face interrogation in accordance with the Nigerian Police Act,” AIG Adeniran assured.
The Ekiti State Police Command has pledged a full investigation to ensure justice is served.
