Abuja’s Second Runway Project Hits Snag Amid Soaring Costs

Nigeria _ The construction of a second runway at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja has ground to a halt due to a staggering cost escalation, ballooning from an initial ₦90 billion to a whopping ₦532 billion.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, revealed the shocking development during the ministry’s 2025 budget defense at the National Assembly. The project, initially conceived to alleviate air traffic congestion, has been plagued by delays and controversies since its inception in 2009. With the contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation Nigeria Limited (CCECC), abandoning the site and requesting a cost adjustment deemed excessive by the minister, the project’s future hangs in the balance.
