Police Rescue 27-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Mast Over Debt

Gombe, Nigeria  —  The Gombe State Police Command has successfully rescued a 27-year-old man, Mohammed Bello, who attempted suicide by climbing a telecommunications mast in Gombe.

According to a statement released on Monday, March 10, 2025, by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, Bello claimed he was being pursued by security agencies due to outstanding debts owed to multiple creditors. Fearing the consequences of his financial situation, he attempted to take his own life rather than face his creditors.

“On March 8, 2025, the Gombe State Police Command received a distress call through the Command Control Room about an unidentified individual who had climbed an MTN telecom mast at Maimala Buni Street, Gombe LGA, and refused to come down,”  the statement read.

Upon receiving the report, the Divisional Police Officer of Pantami Division quickly mobilized officers to the scene. Efforts to communicate with the man revealed his deep distress over unpaid debts, prompting authorities and community leaders to intervene.

Rescue and Intervention

Following negotiations, Katukan Gombe, a respected community leader, successfully persuaded Bello to descend from the mast by assuring him that his financial issues would be addressed. After receiving this reassurance, Bello complied and safely climbed down.

The police immediately took him into protective custody, where he provided a formal statement under caution.

Police Commend Swift Response and Community Efforts

The Gombe State Police Command praised the timely intervention of law enforcement officers and community stakeholders, which ensured that the situation was resolved peacefully. The Command further emphasized the importance of seeking lawful and constructive solutions to financial difficulties rather than resorting to drastic actions.

“We urge the public to seek help when facing financial distress. Support is always available, and there are peaceful ways to address challenges,”  the statement concluded.
