Tinubu Calls for Rule of Law to Resolve Rivers Crisis

Abuja, Nigeria  — President Bola Tinubu has emphasized the necessity of upholding the rule of law to restore stability and progress in Rivers State amid ongoing political tensions.

Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday during a meeting with leaders from the South-South region under the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), President Tinubu stressed the importance of respecting the judiciary’s authority in fostering democracy and unity. According to a statement by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu urged stakeholders to prioritize the collective interests of the Niger Delta over personal or political disputes.

“Nigeria is a great country, and we must protect its democratic foundations. The Niger Delta remains a key contributor to the nation’s economy, and we must ensure stability in the region. Rivers State, in particular, cannot afford prolonged political instability,”  Tinubu stated.

The President acknowledged the challenges in Rivers State and revealed that efforts had been made to mediate the crisis. He confirmed that a written agreement had been reached between conflicting parties, underscoring the need for all stakeholders to abide by the law and recognize constitutional authority.

“This country is governed by the rule of law. I would not be here as President without it. I have full confidence in the judiciary, and once the courts have ruled, their decision must be implemented. I urge you all to return home and ensure that court rulings are respected and executed as soon as possible,” Tinubu added.

Commitment to Stability and Development

President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to development initiatives that will improve the lives of Niger Delta residents. He highlighted ongoing economic reforms, including efforts to boost infrastructure, expand educational funding, and enhance medical facilities.

“We are making deliberate efforts to reposition Nigeria’s economy. We may not achieve everything in one day, but we are steadily moving toward progress. Our ongoing projects, including the coastal road development and the expansion of seaports in the Niger Delta, will open up new economic opportunities for the region,” he said.

Tinubu praised the leadership of Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), acknowledging his contributions to regional development.

“The NDDC is playing a crucial role in advancing the region. Dr. Ogbuku is your son, and he has proven his dedication to serving the people. We must support him to achieve more,”  he stated.

Calls for Further Intervention in Rivers State

PANDEF leaders expressed gratitude for the President’s interventions but urged additional measures to address the ongoing crisis in Rivers State. King Alfred Papapreye Diete-Spiff, Amanyanabo of Twon-Brass Kingdom, commended Tinubu’s leadership and assured him of the region’s continued support.

“Your administration has taken bold steps to address key national issues. We are here to reaffirm our support and trust in your leadership,”  Diete-Spiff said.

Similarly, Obong Victor Attah, former governor of Akwa Ibom State, who chairs PANDEF’s reconciliation committee for Rivers State, warned that the instability in Rivers posed a threat to national peace and security. He urged the federal government to intensify efforts to restore calm in the state.

“Rivers State’s political crisis has broader implications for the stability of Nigeria. We must act swiftly to prevent further escalation,” Attah remarked.

The PANDEF delegation, comprising former governors, lawmakers, ministers, traditional rulers, and representatives of youth and women’s groups, pledged to support all peace-building efforts and called for sustained focus on infrastructure development, environmental sustainability, and fiscal federalism.
