Nigeria – The Nigerian Senate has suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months following a dispute with Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The suspension, announced on Thursday, stems from allegations of violating the Senate Standing Rules by bringing the legislative body into disrepute.
The decision followed an investigation by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct. Despite efforts by some lawmakers to reduce the suspension to three months, a majority vote upheld the six-month term. However, the Senate stated that Akpoti-Uduaghan could seek reconsideration if she tenders a formal written apology.
In an unusual move, the Senate clarified that while her salary would be suspended, her aides would continue to receive their payments.
The controversy began on February 20, 2025, with a seating arrangement dispute, after which Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Akpabio of sexual harassment and abuse of office. She submitted a petition, but the Senate Committee dismissed it, citing procedural issues. Her resubmission of the petition did not prevent the committee from recommending her suspension.
Following the decision, the Kogi Central senator was escorted out of the chambers, declaring that “this injustice will not be sustained.”
