Abuja, Nigeria — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended warm felicitations to former President Olusegun Obasanjo on his 88th birthday, recognizing his enduring impact on Nigeria’s progress and global diplomacy.
In a statement released on Wednesday, President Tinubu described Chief Olusegun Obasanjo as an “extraordinary leader” whose dedication to nation-building has left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s history. He acknowledged Obasanjo’s influential and sometimes controversial role in shaping national policies and fostering accountability in leadership.
Reflecting on Obasanjo’s statesmanship, Tinubu praised his unwavering commitment to national unity, peace, and socio-political development, emphasizing his role as an “Ambassador of Global Peace.” The President lauded his contributions to conflict resolution, governance advocacy, and international diplomacy, which have earned him global recognition.
President Tinubu also highlighted Obasanjo’s pivotal role in Nigeria’s history, recalling his leadership as a colonel in the Nigerian Army during the Civil War, where he received the instrument of surrender from Biafran Army Commander, Colonel Philip Effiong, in 1970. He further commended Obasanjo’s leadership following the assassination of General Murtala Muhammed in 1976, particularly his efforts in overseeing Nigeria’s peaceful transition to civilian rule in 1979.
Acknowledging Obasanjo’s legacy, Tinubu noted that his reform-driven leadership profoundly shaped Nigeria’s socio-economic landscape, implementing policies that impacted millions of lives. Beyond Nigeria, the former president remains a strong advocate for Pan-Africanism, good governance, and diplomatic mediation, actively engaging with institutions such as the African Union and the United Nations.
“Few can deny Chief Obasanjo’s influence in Nigeria’s political sphere, and his contributions to global peace continue to command international respect,” Tinubu stated.
