No fewer than 60 people lost their lives in a tragic auto crash at Oko-Olowo, along the Ilorin-Jebba expressway in Kwara State on Friday. The victims were reportedly traveling from the northern part of the country when the fatal accident occurred.
Eyewitnesses described the incident as horrific, stating that the crash happened when a trailer carrying fertilizer attempted to overtake a petrol-laden truck. The two vehicles collided, resulting in an explosion that engulfed both in flames.
Burnt skulls and other human remains were seen scattered inside the wreckage, while others were flung across the accident scene. The fire raged for over two hours, leaving the victims burnt beyond recognition.
The accident caused severe traffic congestion, lasting until officials of the state fire service arrived to evacuate the charred bodies at about 10:30 a.m.
An eyewitness, he narrated that many people riding on top of the trailer jumped off in a desperate bid to escape the fire. Some sustained broken limbs and other injuries. A father was seen throwing his child out of the burning vehicle before jumping out himself. Those who survived with injuries were rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention.
Arobadi, who resides in the area, lamented the frequent accidents on the Ilorin-Jebba expressway, stating that crashes occur at least once a week, often resulting in heavy casualties.
