Plateau Gov. Halts Mining Over Security, Illegal Activities

Jos, Nigeria —  Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has signed an Executive Order suspending all mining activities across the state, citing rising illegal operations and security threats.

The governor formalized the decision during a high-level meeting with key stakeholders in the mining sector, emphasizing the urgent need to curb unregulated mining and its consequences.

Governor Mutfwang disclosed that 4,600 illegal mining ponds have been identified statewide, posing environmental and security risks. He announced plans to empower security agencies for strict enforcement and proposed the establishment of a mining village to regulate activities and reduce illegal operations.

Backing the move, Chairman of the Plateau State Council of Chiefs and Emirs, Gbong Gwom Jos, Jacob Buba, applauded the decision and recommended the removal of ward, district, or traditional leaders found supporting illegal mining.

Also speaking, State Commissioner for Environment, Peter Gyom, warned that mining without a license remains illegal. He assured that dedicated phone lines would be made available for the public to report violations.

The event concluded with the inauguration of a Technical Committee, led by Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Philemon Daffi, to oversee mining regulations and enforce compliance with the Executive Order.
