Reps Call on FG to Tackle Rising Ritual Killings

Abuja, Nigeria  —  The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to take decisive action against the rising cases of ritual killings across Nigeria.

The lawmakers also called on the National Judicial Council (NJC) to establish special court divisions to handle cases related to homicide, femicide, and other violent crimes.

Expressing concern over the increasing reports of ritual-related murders, especially among young people, the House emphasized the need for urgent intervention to curb the menace and restore public confidence.

The motion, sponsored by Dr. Awaji-Inombek Abiante of Andoni-Opobo Nkoro Federal Constituency and three others, urged law enforcement agencies to prioritize homicide investigations and ensure that perpetrators face swift prosecution.

Speaking on the issue, Billy Osawaru, representing Orhionmwon/Uhunmwonde Federal Constituency of Edo State, decried the growing threat against women, stating that they have become primary targets. Similarly, Abdulhakeem Ado of Wudil/Garko Federal Constituency in Kano State attributed the persistence of such crimes to the lack of diligent prosecution.

In a separate resolution, the House also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct bye-elections for vacant seats in both the National and State Assemblies.
