Abuja, Nigeria — Nigeria’s U-20 national team, the Flying Eagles, have resumed camp as they gear up for two friendly matches against Egypt later this month.
Head Coach Aliyu Zubairu has invited 30 players to the training camp as part of preparations for the upcoming Africa U-20 Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire.
Team Administrator Aliyu Lawal Ibrahim confirmed to thenff.com that the seven-time African champions will face their Egyptian counterparts in Cairo on February 25 and 27.
This year’s AFCON U-20 tournament will take place from April 26 to May 18 in Côte d’Ivoire, with the top four teams earning a place at the FIFA U-20 World Cup, scheduled for September 27 to October 19 in Chile.
The Flying Eagles, African champions in 1983, 1985, 1987, 1989, 2005, 2011, and 2015, secured their qualification after winning the WAFU-B U-20 Championship in Lomé, Togo, last October, where they defeated Ghana’s Black Satellites 3-1 in the final.
A two-time FIFA U-20 World Cup runner-up (1989 and 2005), the team reached the quarter-finals of the last edition in Argentina, where they suffered a narrow extra-time defeat to Korea Republic.
