Abuja, Nigeria — Governor Dauda Lawal has reaffirmed Zamfara State‘s progress in combating banditry, emphasizing that strategic measures are gradually restoring peace to affected communities.
The governor made this assertion during an official visit to the World Bank office in Abuja, where he engaged in discussions on developmental initiatives spanning education, health, climate resilience, and agriculture.
According to a statement by his spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, Governor Lawal expressed gratitude for the World Bank’s continued partnership, underscoring the alignment of the state’s developmental agenda with the bank’s objectives of poverty alleviation and sustainable growth.
“We deeply appreciate the World Bank’s unwavering support,” the governor stated. “Our government has intensified security efforts through increased patrols and targeted interventions to neutralize threats.”
He assured the World Bank of adequate security measures for its personnel during assessment visits, highlighting provisions for secure accommodation, transportation, and communication protocols.
Governor Lawal further disclosed that the state has implemented a continuous security assessment framework to swiftly address emerging risks and ensure a safe environment for both residents and development partners.
Noting a significant decline in attacks, he asserted that Zamfara State is making substantial progress in defeating criminal elements. “The tide is turning. We are steadily winning the battle, and normalcy is returning to our communities,” he affirmed.
The World Bank’s Country Director for Nigeria, Dr. Ndiamé Diop, commended the governor’s approach to governance, lauding the structural reforms that have positively impacted the state.
“I am truly impressed by the systems you have established. Congratulations on the remarkable progress achieved within a short period,” Dr. Diop remarked.
The meeting also featured an appraisal of the NG-CARES project, where the task team leader praised Zamfara’s implementation model, noting that its success has prompted its adoption in other Nigerian states and beyond.
Banditry has plagued Zamfara State for over a decade, leading to widespread insecurity, economic setbacks, and humanitarian crises. However, recent military offensives have dealt severe blows to terrorist factions.
In April 2024, the Nigerian Air Force launched precision airstrikes, neutralizing numerous terrorists in the strongholds of notorious kingpins Abdullahi Nasanda in Zurmi and Mallam Tukur in Gusau.
Additionally, in May 2024, the Zamfara State House of Assembly urged the state government to collaborate with federal authorities to establish a permanent military base in Tsafe Local Government Area to fortify ongoing security efforts.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustaining the fight against banditry while fostering an enabling environment for growth and development in Zamfara State.
