Tensions as Ogoni Oil Exploration Talks Collapse

Bori, Rivers State  —  A crucial meeting aimed at discussing the potential resumption of oil exploration in Ogoniland ended in disarray on Saturday, sparking tension and frustration among attendees.

The gathering, held at the Peace and Freedom Centre in Bori, Khana Local Government Area, was organized following President Bola Tinubu’s directive for Ogoni leaders to consult with their communities before any decision on oil production restart.

The congress, meant to accommodate representatives from Khana, Gokana, Tai, and Eleme local government areas, quickly exceeded its venue’s capacity. By 1 PM, the hall was overcrowded, forcing organizers to relocate the discussions to an open-air setting.

Key dignitaries at the event included Senator Barry Mpigo (Rivers South-East), Chief Victor Giadom (APC Deputy National Chairman), Ledum Mitee (former MOSOP President), and Ignatius Kattey (Co-Chairman, Ogoni Dialogue Committee).

Proceedings commenced at 2 PM, but barely an hour later, the meeting fell apart. After brief speeches by prominent leaders, Senator Mpigo called for unity among the Ogoni people. However, the abrupt departure of VIPs from the venue angered many youths, who viewed the process as poorly planned and lacking inclusivity.

In response, some attendees staged a protest, wielding placards that demanded openness and fairness in the consultation process. The unexpected breakdown of discussions has intensified concerns over whether meaningful engagement will take place before any major decisions on oil exploration in Ogoniland are finalized.

Oil activities in the Niger Delta began in the 1950s, but operations in Ogoniland were halted in the early 1990s due to persistent community unrest. Since then, oilfields and infrastructure in the area have remained largely inactive, making the latest talks a significant moment in the region’s ongoing struggle over resource control and environmental justice.
