India_ At least 39 people have lost their lives and over 200 injured in a devastating stampede at the Maha Kumbh festival in northern India
The tragedy occurred early Wednesday during a sacred ritual bath at the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers, where millions of Hindu pilgrims had gathered. Authorities reported that the stampede was triggered when pilgrims attempted to bypass barricades set up for a procession of holy men. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his condolences to the victims’ families, describing the tragedy as “extremely sad”.
