Supreme Court Confirms Ezeokenwa as APGA Chairman

The Supreme Court has brought an end to the prolonged leadership tussle within the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), declaring Sly Ezeokenwa as the legitimate National Chairman.

In two unanimous rulings, a five-member panel of the apex court dismissed Edozie Njoku’s claim to the party’s leadership, affirming that he had no legal basis for his position.

The court clarified that its previous judgment, issued on October 14, 2021, and amended on March 24, 2023, did not grant Njoku any enforceable rights. Justice Stephen Adah, who delivered the lead judgment, explained that the earlier ruling provided only declaratory reliefs and was not executory, making it improper for Njoku to pursue enforcement through lower courts.

Justice Adah also cautioned judges in lower courts to exercise restraint in handling such cases, criticizing the trial court and the Court of Appeal for entertaining Njoku’s suit. Consequently, the Supreme Court nullified the June 28, 2024, Court of Appeal judgment, which had upheld a Federal Capital Territory High Court decision recognizing Njoku as APGA’s Chairman.

In response to the verdict, Ezeokenwa expressed gratitude to the Judiciary for resolving the leadership dispute, emphasizing the court’s role as a defender of justice. He described the ruling as a reaffirmation of the Judiciary’s status as the last hope for the common man.
