US, Nigeria Collaborate on AI Integration in Military Operations

The United States is collaborating with Nigeria to develop a framework for the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in military operations. This was revealed by Mallory Stewart, Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Arms Control, Deterrence, and Stability at the U.S. Department of State, during a media roundtable in Abuja.

Stewart explained that the goal is to establish principles for using AI in military contexts, ensuring compliance with international law while addressing concerns such as human bias and the potential risks associated with complex AI systems.

“We had productive discussions about incorporating Nigeria’s perspectives into a political declaration that the U.S. is working on with 55 other nations, including several African countries. This declaration will promote the responsible use of AI in military settings,” Stewart noted.

She emphasized the importance of recognizing the risks of AI when layered upon other AI systems and ensuring that its deployment remains within the bounds of international law.

Additionally, Stewart stated that the U.S. is working with Nigeria and other African nations to address factors contributing to instability in the region, to prevent further deterioration of security situations.

During her visit, Stewart engaged with representatives from ECOWAS, the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defense, civil society organizations, and the National Security Adviser.
