Powerful 7.0 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Peru

A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck near Arequipa, Peru’s second most populated city, resulting in injuries but no reported fatalities.

David Aponte, Chief of Disaster Risk Management and National Defense at the Ministry of Health, reported three minor injuries on local radio station RPP. Subsequently, the Ministry of Health confirmed that five additional injured individuals were treated at nearby hospitals, bringing the total number of injured to eight.

Arequipa experienced four aftershocks ranging from 4.0 to 4.6 in magnitude, which triggered landslides on local roads.

The U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center initially issued a tsunami threat, noting waves between 1 and 3 meters (9.84 feet) above tide level along parts of Peru’s coast. However, Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzen later announced that the tsunami warning for Arequipa’s coast had been lifted.

Carlos Zanabria, an adviser to the regional government of Arequipa, told RPP that while there was material damage in some districts and residents evacuated their homes in fear, there were no reports of deaths or serious injuries.

Flavio Aranguren, mayor of the Yauca district in Arequipa’s Caraveli province, confirmed to RPP that some house walls had collapsed but there were no fatalities.

The town of Yauca and nearby areas host small artisanal gold mines, but no information on the impact on these operations has been reported.

Ricardo Guillen from the National Emergency Operations Center noted power and telephone outages in areas close to the earthquake’s epicenter.

Ecuador and Peru are located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region prone to frequent seismic activity due to tectonic plate movements.
