The European Union (EU) Heads of Delegation accredited to West African countries have reaffirmed their dedication to strengthening partnerships with their host nations, with a particular focus on Nigeria.
During a reception organized in Nigeria, the EU envoys emphasized their commitment to this goal. Samuela Isopi, Head of the EU Delegation to Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), explained that the choice to hold their meeting in Nigeria was due to the country’s status as a political and economic powerhouse in the West African region. Additionally, Nigeria currently chairs the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government and hosts the ECOWAS Commission.
Commenting on the outcomes of their discussions, Isopi stated, “We agreed that to address the challenges, we need to collaborate closely, support ECOWAS, and assist the people of ECOWAS member countries. We shared ideas on how to achieve this.”
Nigeria’s Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu, acknowledged the progress made in Nigeria-EU relations under Isopi’s leadership. He affirmed the federal government’s commitment to the rule of law, democracy, and international concerns such as climate change and migration.
“We are dedicated to the rule of law, democracy, and global issues like climate change and migration. We want our children to travel the world by choice, not out of necessity,” Bagudu noted.
