Strike: Aviation Unions to Shut Down Local and International Airports

On Sunday, labor unions in the aviation sector announced plans to shut down airports nationwide, adhering to the directive from the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), starting Monday, June 3.

Newsmen reports that the NLC and TUC called for an indefinite nationwide strike on Friday, citing the federal government’s failure to finalize a new national minimum wage and reverse the hike in electricity tariffs.

In a joint statement, the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSAN), Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), and National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE) announced that local airports will close at 00:00 hours on Monday, June 3, 2024, with the strike extending to international airports on Tuesday, June 4, 2024.

The statement, signed by NUATE General Secretary Comrade Abba Ocheme, ATSSAN Deputy General Secretary Comrade Frances Akinjole, ANAP Secretary General Comrade Abdul Rasaq Saidu, and NAAPE General Secretary Comrade Olayinka Abioye, confirmed that the unions’ service withdrawal would be indefinite.

“In compliance with directives from our labor centers, NLC and TUC, we inform the general public, aviation service providers, airline operators, aviation businesses, and all aviation workers nationwide that starting from 00:00 hours on June 3, 2024, all services at Nigerian airports shall be fully withdrawn until further notice.

“Recognizing that many international flights to Nigeria are already airborne, the strike action at international terminals will begin on June 4, 2024.

“All aviation workers should acknowledge the seriousness of this struggle and comply unfailingly. All branch officers of our unions shall ensure full compliance at all airports,” the statement read.
