Kigali, Rwanda — Super Eagles striker Tolu Arokodare has revealed that he anticipated his national team invitation following his remarkable form with Belgian club, Genk.
The 24-year-old forward earned his maiden call-up to the Super Eagles’ 39-man provisional squad for Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe. His inclusion was later confirmed in the final 23-man squad for the crucial encounters.
Arokodare, who currently leads the Belgian Jupiler Pro League scoring charts with 17 goals, was among the early arrivals to the national team’s camp in Kigali.
Reflecting on his invitation in an interview with NFF TV, the striker admitted that while he was honored to be listed among the initial 39 players, he was not entirely surprised.
“At first, it was a bit unexpected, but I felt privileged to be considered. However, I knew my call-up was coming because I had been performing well, and I was hopeful it would happen,” Arokodare shared.
He further expressed his excitement about making the final squad, emphasizing that just being in contention was already a significant achievement.
“Even if I hadn’t made the final 23, I would have still considered it a major milestone. Being selected fills me with gratitude—it’s truly a special moment,” he added.
The striker also spoke about the importance of representing Nigeria, describing it as a childhood dream come true.
“Growing up, I watched the country’s football legends, and now being in a position to play for Nigeria means the world to me. This is one of the greatest honors for any footballer.”
Arokodare will be hoping to make an impact as Nigeria seeks to secure vital points in the World Cup qualification campaign.
