A 14-year-old student opened fire at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of two students and two teachers, and leaving nine others injured. Authorities confirmed the incident, which took place just weeks after the new school year began, adding to the escalating concerns over gun violence in schools across the U.S.
The suspect, identified as Colt Gray, is currently in police custody and is expected to be charged as an adult, according to Chris Hosey, Director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. However, details regarding the motive behind the attack and the weapon used have not yet been disclosed.
President Joe Biden has been briefed on the situation and, in a statement, expressed sorrow over the tragic loss of life. He extended condolences to the victims’ families and called for bipartisan cooperation in passing “common-sense gun safety legislation” to prevent future tragedies. The White House has pledged to continue working closely with federal, state, and local authorities as more information unfolds.
