A devastating incident occurred in New Orleans’ French Quarter on Wednesday afternoon when a vehicle rammed into a crowd on Bourbon Street, leaving 10 people dead and 30 injured.
The tragedy unfolded around 3:15 p.m. local time when the driver sped into a densely packed area. Witnesses reported that the individual exited the vehicle and began firing at pedestrians.
New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick described the act as “deliberate and calculated,” stating, “This individual was intentionally targeting as many people as possible.”
The FBI has taken charge of the investigation. Special Agent Althea Duncan confirmed that while the incident is not being classified as terrorism, improvised explosive devices found at the scene are being examined. Duncan urged the public to stay away from the area during ongoing investigations.
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry expressed profound sorrow, calling it a “horrific act of violence.” He extended condolences to the victims and their families while praising first responders for their rapid response.
Authorities have not yet identified the victims, most of whom are believed to be local residents. Officials cautioned that the death toll and injury numbers may change as the investigation progresses.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and New Orleans is on high alert as authorities continue to gather evidence and secure the scene.
