Zamfara poultry farmers express concerns over rising production costs and declining sales.

Poultry farmers in Zamfara State are currently grappling with challenges such as high production costs and low patronage, leading to a decline in their businesses.

One of the major issues highlighted by farmers like Mallam Ibrahim Usman is the economic hardship prevailing in the country, which has significantly impacted the poultry industry.

Usman emphasized the importance of the poultry sector to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and urged the government to take action to address the economic situation.

A key factor contributing to the difficulties faced by poultry farmers is the high cost of essential feed ingredients like maize and soybeans.

Despite being in the rainy season when maize prices are expected to be lower, farmers are experiencing elevated costs for these crucial inputs.

Usman suggested that providing soft loans to poultry farmers at low-interest rates, along with additional support for raw materials, could help revive the industry.

The issue of moisture content in new maize is also affecting poultry production, leading farmers to resort to time-consuming methods to dry the grains.

Additionally, the exorbitant cost of broiler feed further compounds the financial challenges faced by farmers. The high production costs coupled with the low selling prices of eggs have resulted in minimal profit margins, ultimately forcing some poultry farmers to shut down their operations.

The suspension of the State government’s student feeding program, which previously provided a market for poultry products, has also had a negative impact on farmers like Mustapha Liman. Without this source of steady income, farmers are struggling to maintain their businesses.

Despite these challenges, some farmers like Yusuf Abdulrahaman are finding ways to survive by supplying roasted chicken dealers.

These farmers are resilient and resourceful in adapting to the changing market conditions to sustain their livelihoods.
