Yobe Reopens 2 Markets Shut Over Insecurity

Yobe, Nigeria — The Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni, conducted a security council meeting on Tuesday to review the security measures put in place to address security challenges in the state.

The governor, represented by his deputy, Idi Barde Gubana, announced the reopening of two markets out of the three earlier closed due to security concerns in the state.

Briefing the newsmen on the outcome of the meeting, Brigadier General Dahiru AbdulSalam (retd.) said the decision to reopen the markets followed an improvement in the security situation.

“The reopening of two markets is due to an improved security situation. The two markets reopened for operations are the Buni Yadi weekly market and Kukurate market,” he announced.

AbdulSalam disclosed that the engagement has paved the way for an improvement in the relationship between farmers and herders.

He said the state government has also constituted a task force to redefine the state’s cattle routes to allow for cattle breeding and reduce clashes between herders and farmers.

AbdulSalam charged security operatives not to relent in their efforts to make the state a crime-free zone.

He announced the constitution of a task force to work on redefining the cattle routes with the aim of allowing for a harmonious relationship between farming communities and animal rearers.

“The task force will tour all local government areas to ensure cattle routes are open for cattle breeding,” he emphasised.

On drug trafficking, AbdulSalam said the state government has taken measures to curb drug peddling.

He said suppliers were identified, and measures were being taken by the state government to ensure the control of its movement into the state and other parts of the country.

“The state is identifying suppliers and working to block channels for drug movement into the state.

“The state government has approved the establishment of three rehabilitation centres (in Damaturu, Potiskum, and Gashua) for drug users and sellers,” he disclosed.
