Lagos, Nigeria — A student of Yaba College of Technology (YabaTech) has been tragically killed in what authorities suspect to be a cult-related attack, shortly after completing his examinations on Tuesday.
The incident occurred near the institution’s back gate, where the unidentified student was reportedly confronted by a group of assailants who shot him at close range. Eyewitness accounts suggest the attack was sudden and violent, sending shockwaves across the academic community.
Spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the development in a statement, disclosing that seven suspects have been apprehended in connection with the fatal shooting.
According to CSP Hundeyin, law enforcement received a distress call around 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, prompting the rapid deployment of a patrol team from the Sabo Division to the scene. Upon arrival, officers discovered the student lying lifeless, surrounded by a pool of blood.
Preliminary observations revealed bullet wounds on the victim’s body. Additionally, four rounds of live ammunition and charms were recovered from the deceased’s pockets during on-site investigations. The body has since been transported to the morgue for further examination and autopsy.
The Lagos State Police Command has assured the public of its commitment to uncovering the full circumstances surrounding the incident, while urging students and residents to remain vigilant and avoid affiliations that threaten peace and public safety.
The authorities have also reiterated the need for community cooperation in combating cultism and preserving safe learning environments across tertiary institutions in the state.
