World Netball Implements Ban on Transgender Women in International Competition

World Netball has enforced a ban on transgender women from participating in women’s international competitions.

This decision, effective immediately, follows the release of a new participation and inclusion policy by the global governing body.

According to the policy, women’s netball at the international level will now exclusively feature players identified as female at birth, regardless of gender identity. Transgender athletes must provide satisfactory evidence to World Netball that they have not undergone the biological effects of testosterone at any point.

In a statement, World Netball underscored the necessity of this policy after a thorough examination of scientific evidence and consultations with experts and stakeholders. The governing body maintains that international women’s netball is a gender-affected activity, necessitating a policy to uphold fairness and safety.

Citing extensive research published in peer-reviewed journals from various research groups worldwide, World Netball stands by the robustness of its decision-making process.

While World Netball has set these guidelines, national governing bodies retain the autonomy to adjust or disregard them based on alternative criteria for their participation rules.”
