Women’s T20 World Cup Relocated to UAE Amid Bangladesh Unrest

The 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup, originally scheduled to take place in Bangladesh, has been relocated to the United Arab Emirates due to ongoing civil unrest in the country.

In an official statement released on the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) website, ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice confirmed that the tournament will now be held at two venues in Dubai and Sharjah from October 3 to 20, 2024.

“It is unfortunate that we are unable to host the Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh as originally planned, as we were confident the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) would have delivered a remarkable event,” Allardice said.

He expressed appreciation to the BCB for its efforts to make the event possible, but noted that travel advisories from the governments of several participating nations rendered it unfeasible to proceed with Bangladesh as the host. However, the BCB will retain the hosting rights for a future ICC event.

“We look forward to bringing an ICC global event to Bangladesh in the near future,” Allardice added.

Bangladesh has been gripped by months of civil unrest, leading to numerous fatalities and culminating in the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
